Octopus Energy referral code: FAQ
Everything about the £50 Octopus referral credit — timing, safety and the edge cases.
How much is the Octopus Energy referral credit?+
£50 of credit when you switch to Octopus through a referral link. Business and charity switches get £75. It’s added straight to your Octopus energy account.
Is the Octopus referral code still working in 2026?+
Yes. The scheme is active and we re-verify our code on the 1st of every month. We last confirmed it works on 1 June 2026.
How long does it take to get the £50 credit?+
It’s paid automatically once your switch completes and your first monthly Direct Debit has been taken — usually around 4 weeks after you join. No claim needed.
Is this an official Octopus Energy offer?+
Yes — the £50 referral credit is Octopus’s own scheme. Octopus Energy Referral is an independent guide, not affiliated with Octopus, but the link takes you straight to Octopus’s website where you sign up directly with them.
Will my gas or electricity be interrupted when I switch?+
No. Same pipes, same wires, same meter — switching only changes who bills you. There’s no engineer visit and no break in supply, and the whole thing is protected by the Energy Switch Guarantee.
Do I need a smart meter to use a referral code?+
No. A smart meter isn’t required to switch or to get the £50. Octopus can fit one later for free if you’d like one.
Can I add the code after signing up?+
No — it has to be applied at sign-up, which is why using the link (where it’s applied automatically) is the safe route. If you join without it, the £50 generally can’t be added later.
Why use a referral link instead of going direct or via a comparison site?+
Because it’s the only way you get the £50. Sign up cold or through a price-comparison site and you typically get nothing — Octopus pays the comparison site instead of you. The referral link is what puts the £50 in your account.
Is it safe to use a referral code?+
Completely. You never share anything with us — you sign up directly on Octopus’s website. The code only tells Octopus to add £50 to your account. Octopus is a Which? Recommended supplier used by 1 in 4 UK homes.
What if I’m on a prepayment / pay-as-you-go meter?+
You can still switch and get the £50. Prepayment switches are processed manually by Octopus, so the credit can take a little longer and you may be asked for a few extra details.
What happens to my credit if I move home?+
Octopus can move your account and any credit with you to your new address — just tell them you’re moving.
What is the Octopus referral link format?+
There are two valid shapes: the classic share.octopus.energy/word-word-number and a personalised subdomain like elliott50.octopus.energy — both apply the code automatically, so there’s nothing to type. The only thing that stops the £50 is signing up through a price-comparison or switching site instead of a referral link.
My £50 referral credit hasn’t arrived — what should I do?+
First, check the timing: it lands ~4 weeks after your first Direct Debit clears, not on day one. If it’s overdue, message Octopus via the app or email — and make sure you joined by clicking the referral link directly, as comparison-site or direct sign-ups don’t trigger the £50.
