Octopus Energy £50 free credit: how the sign-up offer actually works

What people call Octopus's "£50 free credit", "joining bonus" or "sign-up offer" is really the referral scheme: £50 of energy-bill credit for you, added automatically once your switch completes. Here's exactly how to get it, when it lands, and what can delay it.

What the '£50 free credit' actually is

Search for an Octopus "sign-up offer", "joining bonus" or "free £50" and you land on the same thing under different names: the referral scheme. When you join Octopus through a referral link, Octopus credits £50 to you. It is energy-account credit that comes off your bills, not cash in your bank or a cheque, and there is no voucher to redeem. A domestic account gets £50; a business or charity account gets £75. Octopus does not run a separate "enter a promo code" box, so you will not find one and you do not need one. The £50 is attached to the link itself, which is why clicking through is the whole job.

How to get it, and the one thing that voids it

All you do is open a valid referral link first, then complete your switch on the Octopus quote that loads. A valid link can look like the classic share.octopus.energy address or a personalised subdomain such as the one behind the button on this page. Both carry the same £50, so don't worry if it isn't the format you were expecting. The single thing that reliably kills the bonus is arriving through a price-comparison or switching site such as Uswitch, Confused or GoCompare, because that route hands the introducer fee to the comparison site instead of crediting you. Going direct through a referral link is what unlocks the £50; contrary to a common myth, simply using a link does not void anything.

Prepayment and pay-as-you-go count too

Switching to Octopus gets you £50 once your switch completes (T&Cs apply, one switching offer per household). Prepayment and pay-as-you-go customers are eligible too; their credit is handled manually rather than automatically, so it can take a little longer to appear.

When the £50 lands: the honest timeline

Two things have to happen before the credit is released. Your switch has to complete in full, and your first monthly Direct Debit has to clear. In practice that is usually around four weeks from signing up, sometimes longer if your old supplier drags out the final stages of the switch, so treat four weeks as typical rather than guaranteed. The switch itself is the quick part: it is covered by the Energy Switch Guarantee, takes about five working days, uses the same meter, pipes and wires, needs no engineer and never interrupts your supply. The £50 simply trails behind once that first payment has gone through. If you are on prepayment, expect the manual route to add a bit more time. Once it lands, the credit does not expire while you stay a customer.

Is it worth switching for £50?

Be honest about the trade-off. £50 is real money, but it is bill credit, so the tariff still needs to stand up on its own. A comparison site might occasionally surface a cheaper headline rate from a smaller supplier, but you would forfeit the £50 and be weighing it against a less-established name. Octopus is the UK's largest electricity supplier, powering roughly one in four GB homes on 100% renewable electricity, with a multi-year Which? Recommended Provider record and an "Excellent" Trustpilot score around 4.8 out of 5; those are Octopus's figures, not ours. With the energy price cap rising about 13.5% from July 2026 to roughly £1,862 a year for typical dual-fuel use, a no-exit-fee fix like the current version of Octopus's 12M Fixed is worth a look. We don't quote prices here because they change quarterly and vary by region, so check the live rate on octopus.energy.

Join first, then the clever tariffs

If you have heard about Tracker, Agile, Intelligent Octopus Go, Cosy or Outgoing, those smart tariffs require you to already be a customer with a working smart meter. The sensible order is to join through a referral link, so you get the £50, then move onto whichever smart tariff suits your home. Switching between Octopus tariffs once you are in is free and takes minutes, so there is no reason to skip the £50 on the way in.
