What the '£50 free credit' actually is

Search for an Octopus "sign-up offer", "joining bonus" or "free £50" and you land on the same thing under different names: the referral scheme. When you join Octopus through a referral link, Octopus credits £50 to you. It is energy-account credit that comes off your bills, not cash in your bank or a cheque, and there is no voucher to redeem. A domestic account gets £50; a business or charity account gets £75. Octopus does not run a separate "enter a promo code" box, so you will not find one and you do not need one. The £50 is attached to the link itself, which is why clicking through is the whole job.

How to get it, and the one thing that voids it

All you do is open a valid referral link first, then complete your switch on the Octopus quote that loads. A valid link can look like the classic share.octopus.energy address or a personalised subdomain such as the one behind the button on this page. Both carry the same £50, so don't worry if it isn't the format you were expecting.
