Octopus Energy referral: £50 credit when you switch
Use a verified Octopus Energy referral link and you get £50 of bill credit — paid automatically, usually around four weeks after you join.
Tap to switch and get £50
Switch to the UK’s most awarded energy supplier! Switch to Octopus Energy and you’ll get £50 credit once your switch is complete. T&Cs apply (only one switching offer per household).
How the £50 referral actually works
The referral scheme is Octopus's own, and it's deliberately simple. You open the referral link on this page, sign up to a tariff directly on Octopus's website, and once you're a customer Octopus puts £50 onto your energy account. It lands as bill credit against your account, not a cash payment or cashback, so it works its way through your statements rather than your bank account. There's no claim form, and accrued credit doesn't expire while you stay with Octopus. Business and charity switches work the same way but at the higher rate of £75.
What counts as a valid referral link
Two link formats both qualify: the classic share.octopus.energy/word-word-number style, and personalised subdomains in the form name.octopus.energy. The link on this page is a personalised subdomain, and it is exactly as valid as the share-style one — anyone telling you only one format works is mistaken. There is no "enter a code" box anywhere in Octopus's sign-up, so don't go hunting for one or trying to paste a code in. Attribution happens automatically the moment you open the unique link and complete sign-up from there, which is precisely why using the link is the safe route rather than trying to add anything by hand afterwards.
When the £50 lands
The credit is triggered by two things, not one: your switch has to fully complete, and your first monthly Direct Debit has to clear. In practice that's usually around four weeks after you join, though it can take longer if your old supplier is slow to release the switch. It's paid automatically once both boxes are ticked, so there's nothing to chase on day one. If you're on a prepayment or pay-as-you-go meter you're still eligible — those referrals are handled manually by Octopus, so the credit can take a little longer and you may be asked for a few extra details.
The one thing that voids the bonus
The bonus disappears in one situation: signing up through a price-comparison or switching site — Uswitch, Confused.com, GoCompare and the like — or any route that drops the referral link along the way. When that happens Octopus pays commission to that third party instead of crediting you, and the £50 is gone. To be clear, simply using or opening a referral link does not void anything — that's a common myth. What matters is that you reach Octopus's sign-up through the referral link and complete it there, rather than arriving via a comparison journey that strips the referral out.
Why it's safe
Switching to Octopus gets you £50 once your switch completes (T&Cs apply, one switching offer per household). You're never sharing payment or account details with this site: you sign up directly on Octopus's website, and the link only tells Octopus to credit your account. For context, Octopus is the UK's largest electricity supplier, used by around one in four GB homes, runs on 100% renewable electricity, and is a multi-year Which? Recommended Provider rated "Excellent" at about 4.8/5 on Trustpilot — those are Octopus's own figures. We're an independent guide, not Octopus itself and not endorsed by them.
Switching is quick, protected and worth doing now
Changing supplier doesn't touch your pipes, wires or meter — it only changes who bills you. There's no engineer visit and no break in supply, the whole thing is covered by the Energy Switch Guarantee, and it typically takes around five working days. With the July 2026 price cap up roughly 13.5% to around £1,862 a year for typical dual-fuel use, there's an honest case for not sitting on a deal you're not happy with. We won't quote unit rates or a tariff price here because they move every quarter and vary by region; check octopus.energy for live rates, and remember the £50 credit is on top of whatever tariff you choose. Smart tariffs like Tracker, Agile, Intelligent Octopus Go and Cosy need you to be a customer with a working smart meter, so the usual order is to join first through the link, then switch onto them for free.
